One of the most common side-effects is sleepiness, so it can be beneficial for people suffering from chronic insomnia. Gabapentin can be used to treat pain and seizures in adults and in children who are at least 3-years-old. It has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of seizures and postherpetic neuralgia. In other words, it has not been approved by the FDA for the treatment of insomnia. Thus, doctors also prescribe it for insomnia, although this is an “off-label” use.
